PhDs – Ongoing
Majd Bitar (Started the 01/11/2024)
Majd Bitar’s PhD is titled “Keeping together during transitions between place when collaborating in social virtual reality” and will start in December 2024. It is directed by Yannick Prié and co-supervised by Jean-Philippe Rivière, Jean-Marie Normand and myself. In his PhD Thesis, Majd Bitar will focus on transitions between places within social VR environments (e.g., navigating within a VR environment or teleporting between environments) and their impact on collaboration. This PhD is part of the PePR funded project eNSEMBLE.
Adriana Galán Villamarín (started the 23/09/2024)
Adriana Galán Villamarín’s PhD is titled “Designing and evaluating avatar embodiment and Proteus effect in augmented reality” and started on October 2024. It is directed by Jean-Marie Normand and co-supervised by myself and Anatole Lécuyer. In her PhD Thesis, Adriana Galán Villamarín will tackle the design and perception of avatars in augmented reality and explore how embodying them in the physical world can elicit a Proteus Effect. This PhD is part of the ANR funded project ASTRAL.
Chenyao Li (started the 04/10/2024)
Chenyao Li’s PhD is titled “Exploring the use of avatars in virtual urban environments” and started on October 2024. It is directed by Jean-Marie Normand and co-supervised by Marco Boffi and myself. In her PhD Thesis, Chenyao LI will aim to better understand the relation between avatars and the perception of virtual urban spaces and whether avatars can contribute to convey specific urban ambiances. This PhD is part of the ANR funded project PACAP.
Thibaut Stark (started the 10/03/2025)
Thibaut Starks’ PhD is titled “Rééducation des Douleurs Neuropathiques par Neurofeedback en REalité MIXte” and started on March 2025. It is directed by Jean-Marie Normand and co-supervised by Aurélien Van Langhenhove (CHU Nantes) and myself. In his PhD Thesis, Thibaut Stark will aim to design, implement and test non-invasive neurorehabilitation solutions for sensory-motor deficits of the upper limb and neuropathic pain using neurofeedback in Virtual Reality.

Antonin Cheymol (2021 – 2024)
Antonin Cheymol succesfully defended his PhD in December 2024, titled “Reshaping the virtual body’s appearance and movements: A contribution to the study of avatar ‘alteration’ in virtual reality”. It was co-directed by Ferran Argelaguet (25%), Jean-Marie Normand (25%) and also co-supervised by Anatole Lécuyer (25%) and myself (25%).
